Medicare is health insurance provided by the Federal Government for those ages 65 and older, or for people under age 65 who have received Social Security Disability Income (SSDI) for at least two years, and for anyone with End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD).
Medicare is made up of four “parts”; Original Medicare consists of Part A and Part B, which are administered by the federal government and help with the costs of medical care. There is no yearly out-of-pocket limit on Medicare cost-sharing (deductibles, copays, and coinsurance). Original Medicare alone does not provide coverage for outpatient prescription drugs; routine dental, vision and hearing; or long term care.
There are two main ways to bridge the gap in original Medicare coverage; individuals can enroll in one of the government sponsored plans or to choose a private plan like a supplement and a standalone drug plan. CMS contracts with insurance companies to provide Part C Plans and Part D Plans. Plans are listed on www.Medicare.gov and in the Medicare & You publication. Each year during the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) which runs between October 15th through December 7th, beneficiaries have a chance to review newly updated plans that reflect the costs and benefits for the upcoming year.
Private insurance companies also offer Dental-Vision-Hearing plans, Cancer/Critical Illness policies, Short Term & Long Term Care insurance, and Final Expense plans to fill gaps in Medicare coverage.

ACA Plans are Just A Click Away
Unhappy with your Medicare Advantage?
You have one more chance to change your mind. It’s open enrollment for Medicare Advantage. You can switch or drop your plan — but make sure you check your Medigap coverage.
Did you sign up for a Medicare Advantage plan during the annual election period in the fall — also known as open enrollment — only to realize it might not be the best fit?
Good news — you can make changes during the Medicare Advantage enrollment period running from Jan. 1 to March 31, which allows you to:
- Switch to another Medicare Advantage plan, with or without drug coverage.
- Drop your Medicare Advantage plan and return to original Medicare, with the option to join a separate Medicare drug plan.
Any changes you make will take effect on the first day of the month following your plan’s receipt of your request.
What you need to know about the Medicare Advantage open enrollment period
This enrollment period is specifically for individuals who already have a Medicare Advantage plan (also known as Part C) in place. It runs from Jan. 1 to March 31 and should not be confused with Medicare’s annual election period, which ended Dec. 7.
The annual election period from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7 is for anyone with Medicare, whether they have a stand-alone Part D prescription drug plan or a Medicare Advantage plan that includes drug coverage.
For those already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, the open enrollment period from Jan. 1 to March 31 provides these options.
- Switch plans: You can move from one Medicare Advantage plan to another. “They may go from a Part C plan without drug coverage to one with drug coverage, Or vice versa. You may also want to switch from an HMO plan to a PPO, or from one insurance company’s Part C plan to another. There’s a lot of flexibility for existing Part C enrollees.”
- Drop Medicare Advantage entirely: You can opt for Original Medicare (Parts A and B) and enroll in a stand-alone Part D prescription drug plan. However: "Since Medicare Parts A and B don’t provide complete coverage, most people also need to buy a Medigap supplemental plan from a private insurance company.”
Purchasing a Medigap plan can be challenging. Medigap is extra insurance beneficiaries buy to pay for out-of-pocket costs their Medicare plan doesn’t cover. In most states, Medigap is only guaranteed issue during the first six months after your Part B effective date. After that, you could face medical underwriting, higher premiums, or denial of coverage.
